In the south a house is not a home without a porch and it absolutely must be properly oriented to take advantage of prevailing breezes and situated to avoid the impact of summer sun. If you live in the south and you don't have a proper porch you are no doubt suffering unduly. Ideally you should have more than one porch and if you can have an open porch as well as a screened porch, your life will be positively changed forever.

According to Eudora Welty, William Faulkner, Harper Lee and many other authors, southern porches are important places, where a great deal happens, where life is lived. Following are images of some of the porches we've designed. They are natural extensions of the interior functions and spaces they serve. We design social porches, private porches, front, back and side porches, sun porches, screened porches, open porches... Whenever we discuss eliminating a porch because of budget we tell our clients: "If you don't build it you may not realize you miss it, but if you do build it you will never have regrets."
