Robert Cain designed the original Museum in 1976 as well as a subsequent addition and renovation marking the first phase of a planned expansion and remodeling program. The building form echoes the stunning mountain environment and utilizes traditional Cherokee building materials (heavy timber and stone). Copper (a historic Cherokee trade material) was employed in the renovation to replace a wood shingle roof.
Additions to the original program include a Rare Documents Vault, Artifact Storage Area and Exhibit Work Shop.
